BRAMPTON, Ont. - After clinging to a one-point edge following a tense opening quarter, the Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (27-9, 16-5 OCAA) outscored Algonquin 88-51 over the next 30 minutes on their way to a 112-74 victory that punched their ticket to the OCAA Championship.
"We saw some playoff jitters to start the game, but our depth really paid off," head coach Jim Flack said. "Fourteen guys got floor time today, and with the foul problems, it was vital."
Sheridan led 52-37 at halftime and early in the third frame pushed the advantage to 21. Algonquin would pull to within 13 midway through the period, but a 10-4 run from Keenan Danso-Dapaah pushed the margin back to 19 and the Double Blue never looked back.
The home side forced 25 Algonquin turnovers and held big advantages in second chance points (22-8) and points in the paint (48-26).
Four Bruins scored in double figures, led by Danso-Dapaah (29 points, seven rebounds, three steals) and followed by Jemol Edwards (18 points, four steals), Nick Campbell (15 points, nine rebounds), and Khaleek Bakari-Whyte (14 points). With some of the bigs in foul trouble, Sheridan received a key contribution from Solomon Gyamfi, who scored nine points and added seven boards in 10 minutes.
The team advances to the OCAA Championship hosted by Georgian next weekend and for a second straight season will draw Fanshawe in the quarter-finals. The two sides split the season series with the Bruins winning 87-85 at home, before dropping a 98-90 decision in London earlier this month.
Blue notes: The contest was the last home game of the season for the Double Blue, giving them a 16-0 year in the Davis Campus gym. It marks the second time in the past three seasons that their home record was unblemished, and in that span they've complied a 42-1 mark in Brampton.
