After an incredible 2024-25 season, the Men's Soccer team finished with a 7-1-2 record, earning themselves a spot at playoffs. Finishing the season as runner-ups at the OCAA Championship bronze medal game, Team Captain Lachlan Brown-Sutherland looks toward the next season with Nationals in mind.
"As a whole, our group and our team is pretty happy with how we did, but we did fall short of what we wanted to achieve," he says. "We wanted to go to Nationals... so we're definitely not satisfied."
Brown-Sutherland, who plays defensive midfielder, credits work ethic and the desire to compete as very important aspects on the field. When asked what he'd say to someone just starting their soccer career, he states that being the hardest working player on the field is what will set players apart. "There are so many players that have talent—and talent is obviously incredibly important—but it needs to be matched with a really high work rate."
True to his work ethic, the midfielder has been playing for the Bruins for two seasons now, finishing the 2024-25 season with a quality .250 shot percentage. "Lachlan has been the heart of our team this season, leading with both his actions and his words," says Head Coach Alex Liguori. "As captain, he's the kind of player everyone looks up to—dependable, hardworking, and always putting the team first. His commitment and leadership have made a real impact, and we're grateful to have him setting the tone for us every game."
Prior to Sheridan, Brown-Sutherland traces his roots back to four years old when he started Timbits Soccer. Encouraged by his parents to try various different sports, Brown-Sutherland says soccer stuck with him the most. Seven years later, he went on to play for his hometown's soccer team, Whitecaps London, and competed in the Ontario Player Development League. He continues to play for the Whitecaps in League 2 over the summer in between academic terms.
Off the field, Brown-Sutherland has a deep passion for film, completing his second year in the Bachelor of Film and Television program. When deciding on postsecondary programs, the midfielder took a tour around Sheridan, where he discovered the hands-on and collaborative elements of the program. "I really enjoy [it]... I'd say that was the reason I chose this program... I knew that in order to study film, I kinda had to be in and around the Toronto area because there's a large film industry there."
Brown-Sutherland joined the Bruins Marketing Team in the Fall 2024 Semester, where he gained valuable experience applying his skills from the classroom to the field. He attended fellow Bruins games, working as the team's videographer, and captured outstanding Double-Blue moments to share with the community.
As he works toward completing his degree, Brown-Sutherland aims to either work as part of the union or as a freelancer while continuing to play soccer. He explains that there are different unions in the film industry depending on the job, which opens pathways to large productions and movie sets taking place in Toronto or the GTA.
"I'm very passionate with film, filmmaking, [and] being a videographer. Watching films, I'd say, is my [biggest] hobby... and hopefully [it will be] a future career."
