Sheridan Athletics announces the 2024 class of inductees to the Bruins Varsity Hall of Fame, with Ricardo Edwards (Athlete), Natasha Dixon (Builder), Latoya Ogunkanmi (Athlete) and the 2000-2001 Men's Basketball Team set to be enshrined during our annual Homecoming Weekend at the Trafalgar Campus on September 28th, 2024.
Ricardo Edwards, Athlete (Basketball)
Ricardo Edwards arrived at Sheridan from Central Peel in Brampton in 1997, and his impact was immediately felt by both the Bruins Basketball program and the OCAA. In his first season, he was the starting centre on Sheridan's fifth OCAA championship team, leading the double-blue in rebounds and blocked shots. By the time his career was concluded, Ricardo had been named an OCAA all-star, won 3 regular season titles, 3 Ontario Championships, 1 national silver and 2 national championship bronze. His unselfishness was combined with dedication to his team and physical toughness, all ingredients that lead to a Hall of Fame career. In 2005, Ricardo graduated from the Electromechanical Engineeringprogram, and he remains one of the greatest student-athletes in Bruin basketball history.
Natasha Dixon, Builder
Natasha Dixon came to Sheridan from the storied North Park Secondary School Basketball program. Upon her arrival, she set out to launch a re-birth of the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball program, a team that had ceased operations in 1990. After setting the stage, Natasha gathered a group of young women to re-launch the basketball team at the extramural/club level. In 2005, Natasha followed through by becoming the first captain of the Varsity Bruins while leading the team in points, also playing a pivotal role in the selection committee deciding on Shane Bascoe as the coach, a move that led to Sheridan winning three consecutive OCAA titles and becoming the first OCAA team to make the national final. Continually, Natasha Dixon played Varsity Indoor Soccer and Varsity Basketball while succeeding in academics by completing both the Social Service Work and Early Childhood Education programs. Natasha Dixon's quiet strength and athletic skills were key to re-establishing the Bruins' commitment to gender equity and athletic excellence. For those reasons and many others, Natasha has been inducted into the Builder category.
Latoya Ogunkanmi, Athlete (Soccer)
2000-2001 Men's Basketball Team
The 2000-2001 version of the Sheridan Bruins Men's Basketball program still remains one of the most storied teams in the history of the double-blue. The team struggled through a training camp that was riddled with injuries and then faced a first semester that was filled with doubts and leadership struggles. A renewed commitment to defense combined with some roster turnover at Christmas helped to right a ship that was headed straight for a rocky landing. In fact, by the time the Christmas break arrived, the team was saddled with a record of 12 wins and 13 losses. When January arrived, the team hit a new stride and did not lose a game until the national final. Not surprisingly, stars Ricardo Edwards and Elvis Dennis made the second and first OCAA team all-star list, respectively, with Dennis taking home the OCAA Championship MVP title. Along the way, they set the standard for defensive excellence, exhibited a never-say-die resilience, and won the seventh Ontario Championship in program history.
