For anyone entering the police force, teamwork and leadership are key in law enforcement.
Police officers work with a multitude of people and personalities, whether they are colleagues or the public. And for Beyoncé Ho-Sang of the women's basketball team and a fourth year in the Police Foundations program, "team" means to belong and never having to go through anything alone, despite those differences.
"Given the fact that I've played basketball for most of my life, and I've had to learn from instruction and working with others," she said, having chosen policing for its team-focused career opportunities, "I knew that policing would be the best fit for me."
Ho-Sang has been playing basketball for approximately 14 years, and now plays small and power forward for the Bruins. Having started on a youth rep team when she was around 12 years-old, Ho-Sang kickstarted her college basketball career at Centennial where she played for a year before transitioning to Sheridan. Off to a great start, the Bruins secured their first win in the ongoing 2023-24 season at their home opener against the Durham College Lords on October 4th with a final score of 57-42.
"[I was shown] what it means to have patience, compassion, and a sense of caring," Ho-Sang said of her Sheridan coaches, team manager, and athletic therapist. "They had our backs the entire season and nothing they supported me with while going through this journey in life goes unnoticed."
Over the years, Ho-Sang has competed on several teams-honing her skills and making incredible friends along the way. She wasn't initially athletic, but her driven spirit made her determined to be better each time she stepped onto the court. For Ho-Sang, basketball is more than just winning, it's about learning relating the sport to everyday life as a learning process when facing and overcoming obstacles. Continuously keeping an open mind, Ho-Sang knows things may not always go her way, but her heart and passion helps her succeed.
With graduation not too far away, Ho-Sang aims to join the Toronto Police Service or the Peel Regional Police. During her time as a student-athlete, Ho-Sang credited her ability to persevere as a result of the time management skills she developed. "This will help me in my future career because if I learned to never quit on myself, I can help others never quit on their journey," she said.
As she works toward her professional career, Ho-Sang is also keeping the possibility of coaching in mind. She hopes to continue building a solid foundation for women's basketball alongside her coaches. Looking back at her time in Double Blue, Ho-Sang's most memorable moment is her final year at Sheridan. Now, she can show others how trusting the process will allow for achievement, growth, and leadership.
"I truly thank Sheridan for allowing me to get to know these amazing players and my amazing coaches. It's a bond I will never forget."
