Women's volleyball hoping aggressive approach paves way to 2nd half success

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Although they went into a nearly six-week break on a four-match losing streak, the Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (9-7, 4-5 OCAA) remains optimistic that they can turn things around early in the new year.

"We're really trying to play a more aggressive style of volleyball this year. With that, there's going to be some growing pains and those showed in the first half," head coach Scott Hunt said. "We know that to beat the best teams in our league we're going to have to take more risk and earn a lot of our points. If we continue to play aggressively and start to execute at a higher level, we'll be a tough out come playoffs."

The Bruins have seen their increased aggression pay off with an average of 9 kills per set this season. While that is slightly down from 9.1 a year ago, the loss of middle Taylor Ley - who led the club with 2.4 kills per set in 2017-18 - is the bigger factor in that dip.

Sheridan has also seen a slight drop off in their production at the net, sliding from second in the OCAA with 2.3 stuff blocks per set last year to fifth with 1.7. The ability of the Double Blue to make good use of their layoff and improve their efficiency could show right away, as they will open the second half playing the same four opponents - Humber, St. Clair, Niagara, and Fanshawe - that set them on their losing skid.
