NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (15-7, 9-2 OCAA) opened 2019 by splitting a pair of games during the Sting Classic hosted by Seneca, downing George Brown (65-54) while falling to Fanshawe (89-58).  

"It was good for the girls to get some games to stay sharp and prepare for the second semester," head coach Sean Douglas said. "We also got a chance to see a couple of teams from the East that we may see later on down the road so it's also important to see how we match up."

Against George Brown the Bruins led by as many as 13 in the second half, but saw the East Division co-leaders trim the margin to one (55-54) with 2:38 remaining, before a 10-0 Sheridan run slammed the door shut. 

Theresa Brown (19 points) and Sydney Charvis (17) were both in double figures, while Camila Orellana hauled down a game-high 19 boards. 

Against Fanshawe, the Double Blue were ice cold, hitting 23 of 78 attempts from the floor, 2 of 10 from 3-point range, and 8 of 19 from the free throw line. 

The team will resume OCAA play with a tough road swing through southwestern Ontario for games against Lambton (Jan. 12) and St. Clair (Jan. 13, and Douglas said having a couple of January games already under their belt will help them hit the ground running.  

"Right now the main goal is coming into second semester league games with a clean slate and a clear mind of what we need to accomplish," he said. "We have a good thing going right now, so we don't want to peak too early."
