Women's basketball to make 2nd half push for home playoff game

BRAMPTON, Ont. - With the fall exam period now behind them, the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (14-4, 9-2 OCAA) can reflect on a first half that saw them match last season's OCAA win total of nine, and can begin to set their sights on hosting a first-round playoff game.

"Over the course of a season, every team is going to go through stretches where you shoot the ball well or you shoot the ball poorly. We didn't want those peaks and valleys to define our potential," head coach Sean Douglas said. "From the beginning of training camp, we emphasized that how we played at the defensive end and how we got after things on the glass was going to be a big part of our identity. And you can see the results, not only in our performances, but on the scoreboard too."

The Bruins have seen that renewed commitment to the defensive end of floor produce the second fewest points per game allowed (55.7) in the OCAA, down from 67.5 a year ago. They have also seen their scoring increase from 67.3 points per game to 72.1, largely fuelled by the extra possessions they gained by gathering 2.5 more offensive rebounds (from 12.9 - 15.4) per game.


The Double Blue will return to the court this week for a pair of games in Buffalo against Villa Maria. After dropping two of their first three games, the Vikings have reeled off nine-straight victories and are the No. 2 ranked team in the USCAA Coaches Poll.

Villa Maria averages 87.3 points per game, while limiting their opponents to 62.5, and four Vikings score in double figures, led by senior Shaquana Owens (18.7).

Playoff picture

If the OCAA season ended today, the Bruins would finish second in the OCAA West and host Georgian (2-7) in an OCAA Championship Qualifier.
