Men's volleyball set for playoff showdown in nation's capital

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team (9-12, 7-11 OCAA) will put their season on the line when they travel to Ottawa to take on La Cite (15-3 OCAA) in an OCAA Championship qualifier on Feb. 16 (1pm).

"We've watched a lot of tape, and they're a really good team," head coach Frank Pento said. "But I do feel that we're prepared. Playing in the OCAA West is a gauntlet, and while that presents challenges night-in and night-out during the season, it does give a you much better experience by the time the playoffs roll around when it's win or go home."

The Coyotes have a potent offensive attack which recorded the most kills in the OCAA this season (745) and was the fifth most-efficient unit in doing so, hitting at .291. They look to serve aggressively, as evidenced by the second-most aces in the league with 166 and the third-most errors with 275. They also posted 150 stuff blocks, good for fifth in Ontario.

Setter Xavier Demars is the focal point of the offence, dishing out 530 assists while also amassing the third-highest point total on the team with 117. He was the only player in the country this season to record at least 500 assists and 100 points, thanks in large part to being a team co-leader with 37 blocks.

That is not where the La Cite attack ends however, as they also boast the leagues two leading scorers in the form of Nicolas Pirnat and Michel Leblanc. The two fourth-year outside hitters put up staggering and extremely similar numbers during the campaign.

Pirant led the league with 286 on 223 kills, 40 aces, and 23 blocks, while hitting at .385. Leblanc, meanwhile, scored 284 points on a league-high 230 kills, while hitting .305 and chipping in with 47 aces and seven blocks.

The winner will advance to the OCAA Championship hosted by Humber next weekend, and will play the winner of the Redeemer/George Brown crossover in the quarter-final.
