BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (9-1, 1-0 OCAA) topped the century mark for the fifth time in 10 games this season, holding off St. Clair for a 119-108 victory in their OCAA West opener. 

Fuelled by a red-hot start from Kahleek Bakare-Whyte - who scored 14 first quarter points while connecting on four of five 3-point attempts - the Bruins held a 34-22 lead after one. Both sides put up 24 points in the second period, giving Sheridan a 58-46 halftime lead. 

In the third quarter there were only 11 missed shots combined as St. Clair connected on 73.3 per cent from the floor, while the Bruins were 12-for-19, good for 36 points and a 94-78 lead entering the fourth. 

The visitors were able to make it a two-possession game late, pulling to within six and just under a minute to play, but the Bruins were perfect from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the win.

Bakare-Whyte poured in a game-high 39 points, while four other Bruins - Nick Campbell (23), Jemol Edwards (18), and Tremaine Anderson (11) - were all in double figures.

Sheridan will host Sault for a pair on Oct. 27 and 28. 

Blue notes: The game was just 10 points shy of tying the OCAA record for most combined points in a game. Sheridan first set the mark in a triple overtime contest against Mohawk on Feb. 6, 2010. It has since been matched in a game between Mohawk and Niagara on Jan. 12, 2017.
