When Sandra Hamilton first arrived on campus in 1986 to begin her college career, she was quite disturbed to find that the school did not have a women's basketball team. For a determined girl from Sudbury, this was just not acceptable. She approached Dick Ruschiensky, the athletic director, to learn what would need to be done in order to get a team. Upon learning that she would need to find some players and play as a club team for a year before joining the OCAA for league play the following year, Sandra was able to quickly round up 10 players and report back. Not only did she possess a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and determination -- the skills required to put the team together in the first place -- but she was easily one of the most skilled players in the province. A dead-eye shooter, Sandra was selected as an OCAA All-Star and All-Canadian during the 1987-88 season when she averaged 22.9 points per game.
