Student Athlete Spotlight - Tyler Chisholm

The Men's Basketball team ended a mid-season hurdle when they won against the St. Clair's Saints last 2023-24 season; it was a pivotal moment that wing-player Tyler Chisholm, a first year in the Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting) program, remembers as his most memborable moment while in Double-Blue.

"This was a very significant win for the team at the time as we were on a pretty big losing streak, and this was a major turning point in the season," he says.

Competitive by nature, Chisholm states that being overly competitive is crucial while on the court. He notes the drive and hard work of the greatest players in the sport and their will to do what they need in order to succeed. He, himself, began his basketball journey at five years old when his father Scott, who also played for the Bruins almost thirty years ago, introduced him to the sport.

When he was younger, Chisholm spent some time with the Milton Stags, a rep team where he played a variety of high-level Canadian leagues and competed in Amateur Athletic Union tournaments across the US. He went on to play for both his elementary and high school teams, winning two Halton Championships in Grades 7 and 8 and the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association Championship in Grade 9. After the pandemic caused a pause in his high school career, he was able to return for his senior year, playing for Scarborough Prep, Burloak Prep North, and a short stint at Lincoln Prep.

Now, as he plays shooting guard or small forward in Double-Blue, Chisholm is heading into his third year with the Bruins; he finished this past 2024-25 season with 39 assists, 42 steals, and 205 points. With Chisholm as the second generation of a family making its way through Sheridan's Basketball program, Assistant Coach Dave Ferencina has the pleasure of witnessing the connection between past and present.

"What makes Tyler special isn't just his skill set, though that's certainly impressive," Coach Dave says. "It's his unwavering commitment to improvement regardless of circumstances." He praises Chisholm for his ability to bounce back from challenges, working hard to refine his game while supporting his teammates. "He fought to get back into the starting lineup in our last game of the season... and contributed 20 points in a win we needed after coming off a tough loss the previous game. That's the mark of a true competitor."

Before starting his current program, Chisholm graduated from the General Arts and Science – University Profile at Sheridan. Although the program offered pathways to other universities to complete the remaining two years of the degree, Chisholm fell in love with the community at Sheridan and chose to continue his studies with the college. "The courses are focused on preparing students for the workforce," he says. "I appreciate the practicality of this style of learning." Chisholm plans on furthering his education after Sheridan, either working toward an MBA or a CPA.

"The ability to juggle multiple serious commitments at the same time without letting either slip is something that I have learned through[out] my time at Sheridan and will most definitely use in the workforce."
