The Sheridan Bruins welcome Brian Lopez as the new Women's Basketball Head Coach!
We're excited to see Lopez in Double-Blue and bring his years of coaching to our basketball program. Before making the switch to coaching womens basketball, he spent years teaching boys the foundation of the sport and preparing them to compete past their high school careers. Currently, he coaches the Halton JUEL program, an elite league for girls in Grades 7-12. With Lopez, the team has medalled over the last three years and is now competing for a championship this season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Brian Lopez as the next leader of our women's basketball program. His proven track record of developing elite talent, combined with his commitment to academic and athletic excellence, makes him the perfect fit for our culture. Brian embodies our 'Study. Compete. Graduate. Succeed.' mantra, and we're confident he'll elevate this program to new heights." Tahir Khan, Varsity Sport Coordinator for the Sheridan Women's Basketball team.
During his time with JUEL, Lopez also co-founded Halton Basketball in 2015, a program that is dedicated to the development of young athletes in the region, providing opportunities for growth, competition, and player potential. "This experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of building a strong basketball culture at every level, something I am excited to bring to Sheridan College." Throughout his career, Lopez has coached successful high-level teams and helped numerous athletes pursue basketball at the collegiate and professional levels.
After a challenging 2024-25 season, the Sheridan Women's Basketball team ended with a 3-13 record. Describing himself as a team-oriented coach, Lopez sees the potential for the program and expresses his excitment in working with a group of talented players. "My goal is to build a strong, competitive culture that demands excellence, emphasizes player development, and positions us to consistently compete at the highest level. I am also committed to creating an environment that values hard work, accountability, and academic success, helping our athletes grow into well-rounded individuals both on and off the court."
Lopez's philosophy is that team success equals individual success. It's about fostering an envrionment where players grow in skill, leadership, and confidence. His adaptable approach to coaching allows Lopez to fit a player's needs while "maintaining structure and expectations." Through discipline, communication, and accountability, players can learn not just from him but think critically for themselves.
Khan adds on Coach Lopez's experience, "Brian's success at the highest levels of girls' basketball speaks for itself, but what truly sets him apart is his ability to build relationships and inspire players to exceed their own expectations. His vision aligns seamlessly with our goal of returning to podium relevance and doing so with integrity. This is a pivotal moment for our team, and we couldn't ask for a better coach to lead the charge."
"We are committed to building a strong culture rooted in winning, doing things the right way, and setting a standard that will continue to carry on for years to come, long after my time. The [overall] goal is to create a lasting foundation that future players and teams can be proud of." Coach Lopez
Congratulations and welcome to the Bruins family, Coach Lopez! We're thrilled to see the positive direction he will lead our Women's team toward.
