Student-Athlete Spotlight: Julia Bakes and Eysan Pekoz

The fundamental nature of team sports is the participation of individuals working together--it is essentially impossible to execute singlehandedly. For right-side hitter Eysan Pekoz, a second year in the Pre-Health Sciences program, and left-sider hitter Julia Bakes, a first year in the Journalism program, it does not matter who you are when it comes to volleyball--athletes from all backgrounds meet on the court to play the game.

A new Canadian from Turkey, Pekoz has been playing the sport for ten years. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, she is now a senior member of Sheridan’s women’s volleyball team. “I came to Canada in 2021,” said Pekoz. “My first year was quite difficult for me because I was just learning English, and at the same time, I was involved in a new environment. Because of volleyball, I am much more social. I gradually got used to it, and I feel more confident.”

Fellow teammate, Bakes, is also adjusting well to her new playing environment. Originally a member of the Ontario Volleyball Association’s Milton Edge, the team’s home opener marked Bakes’ first game in the OCAA. “It was a very big moment for me,” she said. When asked about her transition into the OCAA, Head Coach Stuart commented, “Julia is stepping up as a ‘rookie’ and her adaption to the OCAA is ahead of schedule. She is diligent in practice and is working hard.”

With both athletes heading into very demanding careers, their experiences on the court significantly contribute to their futures. “Volleyball is teaching me life skills like time management and organization,” said Bakes. “It correlates to Journalism because, in a newsroom, it’s a fast-paced environment--deadlines are very important.”

For Pekoz, organization is crucial to anyone going into the medical field. “You need to make time to study after practises and games. The reason why I am an organized person is because I’m an athlete.” Coach Stuart acknowledged Pekoz for “displaying leadership with her play.” She can switch positions from right side to left side when needed, a skill she demonstrated against Humber on October 27th. “My goal this year is to fight for every point, keeping myself and my team positive,” said Pekoz.

Despite a rocky start to the season, the team claimed their first win on November 4th against Fanshawe with a final score of 3-2. With more than half of the season remaining, Bakes is earning significant playing time and is hopeful to increase their winning record. “My main goal is to help the team in any way possible, whatever part is needed and wherever they need help.” Bakes and Pekoz performed eight digs each of the 41 executed against Fanshawe.

While the two athletes dedicate ten hours a week to team practises, they find sufficient support and resources to help them succeed athletically and academically. “Coach Stuart is very understanding that school is a priority,” said Bakes. “We also have our Team Manager, Kelly, who helps you stay organized and our Student Athletic Advisor, Jacky, who is super helpful.”

“Everyone is so welcoming,” Pekoz said, marking her second year of playing volleyball in Canada. “Sheridan truly cares about their athletes; they can feel confident in receiving all kinds of support. This is a great thing.”
