Bruins Community: Varsity Women's Volleyball Participates in Motionball

Sheridan Bruins believes in giving back to the community, which is why our women's volleyball team is delighted to have participated in the 2023 Marathon of Sport Oakville. Hosted by Motionball, the event raises funds and awareness in support of the Special Olympics Canadian Foundation, a global organization that aims to bring people with and without intellectual disabilities together.

On September 16th, our women's volleyball team joined Motionball on the field at Appleby College, where they met their Special Olympian, Gordon. Together with Gordon, the team participated in a variety of sports throughout this fun-filled day--taking part in ultimate frisbee, soccer, giant pong, benchball, basketball and beach volleyball.

"Bruins Captain for a day, Gordon, kept us on time and carried us with his clutch mid-range jumper on the basketball court," said WVB Head Coach Stuart Hooper. "A great day full of spirited fun and many moments of laughter, the women's volleyball team excelled at benchball, but we need to work on our collective frisbee skills."

The team also participated in Motionball's #NoGoodWay campaign, educating Canadians that there is #NoGoodWay to use the "r-word"; a hurtful word that excludes individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The day's events raised over $30,000 for Special Olympics and #NoGoodWay, helping to ensure individuals with disabilities are provided with resources to stay active at home, safely return to the sports they love and eliminate the r-word from everyday conversation.

"The Special Olympians are inspiring and remind us why we all started in sport--for the joy of it," said Coach Hooper. "We hope to see Gordon and some of the other Olympians at home games and look forward to participating next year."

Motionball proudly hosts over 50 events on 34 post-secondary campuses across the country, empowering leadership among young Canadians to build more inclusive communities through sports.
