Women's volleyball falls to Mohawk in home finale

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (12-12, 7-10 OCAA) dropped their home finale to Mohawk, suffering a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18) loss.

"I thought we played okay at times, but weren't able to put it together consistently enough to overcome Mohawk," head coach Scott Hunt said. "They are a great team and played with more desperation than us tonight. So hats off to them - they outplayed us and deserved the win."

After falling into a 14-7 hole early in the first set, the Bruins managed to climb to within two, trailing 14-12. But an 8-2 run from the visitors allowed them to restore their seven-point cushion, and close out the opener.

In the second, the two sides were knotted at 11, but Sheridan opened a five-point edge on the strength of a 5-0 run. Mohawk answered with a 7-0 run of their own to pull in front approaching the 20s, and looked to be on the verge of a 2-0 advantage when they extended their run to lead 20-17. But the Bruins closed the period on an 8-1 run to level the match at 1-1.

However, Mohawk methodically worked their way to leads of 20-12 in the third and 20-14 in the fourth, on their way to closing out the match.

Katelyn Long scored a team-high 10 points, while Rachel Abrahams (15), Tamia Cooper-Evelyn (13), and Celine Blanchette (10) all hit double figures in digs.

The Double Blue will wrap the regular season with a visit to Conestoga on Feb. 9.

Blue notes: Prior to the game, a pair of graduating seniors - Darby Sewell and Amanda Manley - were recognized for their contributions to the program.
