Women's volleyball set for quarter-final clash with Loyalist

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (19-9, 12-7 OCAA) open play in the OCAA Championship Thursday, drawing a quarter-final match-up against the East Division champion Loyalist Lancers (16-2 OCAA).

"Loyalist is a good team and they present some unique challenges to any team they play," head coach Scott Hunt said. "I think our strengths match up well with how they play, so if we can execute at a high level, I like our chances."

The Bruins and Loyalist met earlier in the year non-conference play, with the Double Blue dropping a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 13-25, 15-13) decision on the final day of the Durham tournament.

On their way to their regular season title, Loyalist won 51 sets while dropping 13, with their two league losses coming to Algonquin (3-2) and championship hosts Centennial (3-1).

Sara Piana (5.7 points/set) led a Loyalist attack that produced 15.9 points of total offence per set, while hitting at a .278 clip.

Christine Madogo - second in the OCAA with 52 blocks - teamed up with Piana and Emilie Leneveu to produce 548 kills, 67 aces, and 116 blocks.

The Bruins, meanwhile, feature a more balanced offence, with five players - Taylor Ley, Tara Aune, Tamia Cooper-Evelyn, Katelyn Long, and Rachel Abrahams - all posting triple digit scoring totals.
