HAMILTON, Ont. -- The Sheridan Bruins Women's Volleyball team (11-7, 5-4 OCAA) finished the first half of the regular season with a road win at Mohawk on Wednesday, defeating the Mountaineers 3-1.

The Bruins got off to a strong start, with a Rachel Abrahams ace sealing the first set for Sheridan as they took it 25-17.

The second set saw a push back from Mohawk, as they picked up their serving pressure. Sheridan faced a large deficit midway through the second set but were able to make a late run.

Although they were able to close the gap, the lead was too large to come back from as Mohawk took the second set 25-21.

Head coach Scott Hunt recognized the importance of the late run in the second to help get momentum back on their side.

"After our rough start to the second set the momentum started to shift in favour of Mohawk," he said. "Even though we lost the second set I still felt it was super important that we showed some resielicnece and were able to battle our way back into it. That was a key turning point in the match as we were able to get momentum back on our side, which I felt we held on to for the reminder of the match."

Sheridan took the third set 25-19 and the fourth 25-18 after building up a double digit lead early in the last set.

Left sides Rachel Abrahams (11 kills, four aces, one block) and Tamia Cooper-Evelyn (13 kills, one ace, two blocks) tallied 16 points each to lead the Bruins.

With the win, Sheridan improves to 5-4 on the season which puts them in a solid position to get back into the playoffs after narrowly missing a playoff spot last year.

"We've seen the potential of our group in the first half and it's very exciting. We still need to improve our consistency if we want to be a top team in the OCAA West" said Hunt after reflecting on the Bruins first half of the season.

Sheridan will be competing in exhibition action over the winter break at the Humber Tournament from Dec 28-30 and at their own tournament Jan 6-7.

The Lady Bruins first league game of the second half is on the road at Redeemer on Friday January 13.
