Men's volleyball add Stokes to 2017 recruiting class

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team continue adding to their roster for the 2017-18 campaign, annoucing today the commitment of outside hitter Matthew Stokes.

"Matt is an extremely talented player and hard worker. His ability to take over a match offensively is going to be a huge boost to our lineup next season," head coach Frank Pento said. "He is a big, strong athlete and will help out on defence as he is a strong blocker."

"I like the fact that the first priority for all of the coaches is academics," added Stokes. "Sheridan has a good skills training centre and is focused on helping me achieve my goal of becoming a plumber with the Mechanical Techniques for Plumbing program. They have all of the resources and access to any academic help I may need to succeed."

The 6'7" Stokes is a native of Chatham and plays for the London Volleyball Club.

He's been a member of multiple SWOSSAA championship teams with his Chatham-Kent Secondary School team, one of the most decorated high school volleyball programs in the province.

Pento is excited to be able to add this kind of talent to his lineup, but more importantly he's looking forward to the kind of dynamic Stokes will add to the team.

"His work ethic, and team first attitude are exactly what we are looking for when recruiting athletes for our volleyball program," he said. "This is a big pickup for our team and we couldn't be happier with Matt's decision to commit to Sheridan."

Stokes is hoping he can be contributor right away and is eager for the opportunity to suit up in Double-Blue.

"I expect to support my teammates on and off the floor by playing the best volleyball I can during practices and games," he said. "I believe that I have a good work ethic and a positive attitude. My height will be a benefit to the team with blocking and striking. I want to learn and grow and hopefully have many successes as a team."
