OAKVILLE, Ont. -- The Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team (5-6 OCAA) started the second half of their season with a thrilling five-set win over Redeemer, before returning to their home court less than 24 hours later and suffering a 3-1 loss to Humber. 

"We were competing really hard, we were really engaged on defence [and even though] we didn't have our best match, we found a way to win in a really tough gym," head coach Frank Pento said following Friday's match. 

After Redeemer won the opener 25-19, the rest of the match was tight the whole way, with the Double-Blue winning the second (26-24), fourth (29-27) and fifth sets (20-18) with Redeemer also picking up the third (31-29). 

Parvir Jhajj notched 22 kills in his Double-Blue debut, while Christian Dela Cruz had a double-double with 20 points (18 kills, one ace, one block) and 10 digs. 

A slow start plagued the Bruins against Humber, with the visitors taking the opener 25-14. 

Sheridan bounced back with a 25-22 win in the second and had leads late in each of the third and fourth sets, but saw Humber take both, 25-22 and 25-21.

"I'm very disappointed with the result," Pento said. "We could use the excuse that we were exhausted from yesterday, but I would rather not. Today we just didn't do a good enough job of staying engaged in the match and errors near the end of all of the sets led to us losing."

The team has a full week to prepare for the next pair of contests, as they host Cambrian on January 21 (8pm) and Boreal on January 22 (3pm). 

Pento says the first part of preparation will be in the recovery phase after a pair of high-intensity contests. 

"We need to have light practice loads the next few days just so that everybody can recover a bit," he said. "We'll watch some video and try to adjust on our errors that we're making in these matches and try to get ready for next weekend."
