Men’s volleyball drop five-set thriller to Fanshawe

OAKVILLE, Ont. (By Kevin John Sacdalan) -- The Sheridan Bruins men's volleyball team (2-1 OCAA) came up on the losing end this past weekend, falling in five sets to the Fanshawe Falcons.

Earlier this season, the Bruins and Falcons met twice at the Fanshawe tournament. The Falcons defeated the Bruins in both those matches in straight sets, but were in for a battle on the Bruins' home court.

"This was one of our first games where we actually had a full starting lineup," head coach Frank Pento said. "We've had some injuries throughout the start of the year."

The Falcons were in control of the opening two sets, winning the first set 25-20, and the second set 25-19. With the Falcons looking to close it out in straight sets once again, the Bruins would fight back to take a close third set. The Bruins took an early lead in that set, but the Falcons stormed back to make it interesting. However, the Bruins were able to weather the storm and close it out, 25-20. They would continue that momentum into an even closer fourth set, taking the set 25-23, forcing a fifth and final set.

"Fanshawe is tough all the time," Pento said. "They play great defence and they're very good at executing when it matters. We were equal to the challenge today, but in the fifth set it could go either way."

It was a back and forth final set, but the Falcons were able to hold on, 15-13. This marks the first OCAA loss for the Bruins, dropping to a conference record of 2-1.

"Unfortunately, we didn't really start to play our type of defence that I'm used to seeing until the third set and when you get to a fifth set, anything can happen and they (Fanshawe) came out on top," Pento added.

The Bruins will look to get back in the win column this Saturday when they host the Redeemer Royals, who are 0-2 in OCAA play.
