ANCASTER, Ont. - With little time remaining in the their final group stage contest, it looked as though the Sheridan Bruins men's soccer team (16-4-5, 3-1-3 OCAA) would be through to the medal round as runners-up at worst, and could even be Pool B winners.
But a pair of late Seneca goals not only snatched the contest from the grips of the Double Blue, it relegated them to third in their group, and eliminated them from title contention.
"There are any number of things we can point for why we're going home today," head coach Andrew Seuradge said. "We didn't exactly close out as well as we would have liked, but we also didn't do a good enough job yesterday finishing off our chances. We could have easily had six points, if not at least four yesterday, but we only got two."
The Bruins opened the championship against their rivals from Humber, controlling the pace for the most part but conceding in the final two minutes to settle for a 1-1 draw.
In their final game of day one, they peppered the Fanshawe net with shots but were unable to find the finishing touch they needed and played to a scoreless stalemate.
Sitting in third heading into day two, they opened with a lot more intensity, downing St. Clair 5-2 to give themselves control of their fate.
Against Seneca they fell behind early, but came back with a pair of goals and were looking to hold on late, up 2-1, when Seneca struck twice in the final five minutes.
