Men's rugby set for championship clash with St. Lawrence

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's rugby team (7-1 OCAA) will battle the St. Lawrence Vikings for Ontario rugby supremacy, meeting in the OCAA Championship Game (Nov. 12, 12pm) at Sheridan Stadium on the Trafalar Campus in Oakville.

"It's been business as usual," head coach Rick Bria said of the team's preparations. "All year we've had the same approach: one practice at a time, one game at a time. That hasn't changed considering what's at stake this week. We're all focused, and we're all pumped."

The Bruins are enjoying their best season in the young history of the program, and find their way into the title contest after playoff victories over Algonquin, 29-14, in the quarter-final, and Fleming, 22-19, in the semi final.

St. Lawrence, meanwhile, knocked off Seneca, 41-10, in the quarter-final, and toppled the reigning champions from Georgian, 28-24, in the semi final.

Like their competitors, St. Lawrence posted a 5-1 regular season record, good for second in the OCAA East Division.

Including post-season games, the Bruins average of 40.1 points per game, and allows 12.5 per contest, while St. Lawrence scores 29.8 points on average, and allows 15.4.

Travis Zelinski and Vasko Alexander were the leading scorers for the Vikings in the regular season, each contributing six tries, good for 30 points apiece.

Ty Shemko was their leading kick-taker, booting through 10 converts and touching it down once for 25 points. He also scored 10 points (two converts, two penalty kicks) in St. Lawrence's semi final victory.
