BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (14-3, 5-2 OCAA) struggled to score consistently, but made enough plays down the stretch to hold off Fanshawe for a hard-fought 87-85 victory.
"We seem to go through droughts with our shooting," head coach Jim Flack said. "It's like our guys have been watching the news and want to build their own wall, brick by brick, and then we catch fire and can't miss. No lead seems to be safe for either team. If nothing else, we're entertaining."
After leading for much of the fourth quarter, it looked as though the game would slip away from the Bruins after a 10-2 Fanshawe run gave the visitors an 83-80 lead with 1:15 remaining. But Kahleek Bakare-Whyte drilled a 3-ball on the ensuing possession and the Double Blue wouldn't trail again.
They struggled offensively for most of the night, connecting on just 28 of 85 field goal attempts (.329). That was especially true in the first half, when they shot 12 of 42 and fell into a double digit hole. Nick Campbell was the exception over the opening 20 minutes, scoring 21 of his game-high 29 points while shooting 7 of 11 (.636) from the floor, including 5 of 6 (.833) from 3-point range in the first half to keep Sheridan within range.
Fanshawe led 21-17 after one and 42-38 at the break. They pushed their advantage as high as eight in the third period before the Bruins started chipping away. Sheridan took the lead late in the third and on a 7-0 run from Keenan Danso-Dapaah to end the third and open the fourth, built their largest lead of the night.
In addition to Campbell, three other Bruins hit double figures - Bakre-Whyte (14), Jemol Edwards (12), and Dontae Thompson (10). They now have eight days to prepare before a visit from Lambton on Nov. 24 (6pm).
