Men's basketball wrap 2017 with 2-1 record at East/West Holiday Series

REXDALE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (17-4, 8-1 OCAA) wrapped up their non-conference schedule and 2017 by posting a 2-1 record in the OCAA East/West Holiday Series.

On day one, Sheridan posted a run-away victory over Centennial (7-3 OCAA), winning 112-57. The game was never in doubt, as Centennial's turnover woes were turned into easy baskets from opening tip to the final buzzer.

The Bruins had to play their second game only two hours later, as they laced up to play George Brown (9-1 OCAA) in a re-match of the 2017 OCAA Championship game. Sheridan trailed most of the way, but their defense finally took George Brown's legs out, and in the fourth quarter, the Bruins were able to gap out by as many as 10, finally settling for a four point spread, winning 88-84.

On day two, the Bruins closed out the tournament against East Division-leading Seneca (10-0), also 2-0 from the day before.

After a strong start from the Double Blue, Seneca caught fire from downtown with 36 of their 49 first half points coming from three-point range.

Seneca stretched their lead to almost 20 before the Bruins responded with a solid run that brought them to within six with the ball late in the game.

Unfortunately, they could get no closer as Seneca made some big shots in the final minutes to claim a 92-83 victory. Of note, Tre Anderson posted a season-high 23 rebounds in the loss.

"These games will be used as a building tool," said assistant coach David Ferencina. "We saw some great things and some things that concerned us. In the end, we feel pretty good about the second semester, and we will fix the problems that got exposed in these games."

The team will take a break for the fall term exam period, before resuming OCAA West play when they host Conestoga on Jan. 16 (8pm).

Blue notes: In calendar 2017, the Bruins posted a 26-2 record against OCAA competition.
