Men's basketball claim WA Fall Showdown title with 4-0 record

BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (6-1) will open OCAA West play on a four-game win streak, claiming the 2017 Wayne Allison Fall Showdown tournament with a perfect 4-0 record, after downing conference-rival UTM 114-73 in the final.

Prior to the final, they had wins over Canadore (104-71), La Cite (117-77), and Georgian (123-62).

It marked first time in the 26 year history of the tournament (re-named from the Bruins Bash to celebrate the tournament's 25th anniversary, as well as Allison's induction into the Sheridan Hall of Fame last fall) that the Bruins had topped 100 points in all of their games.

It also established a new team record for points per game (114.5) during tournament play.

"This year's team is very deep. They play hard and fast. It will be exciting to watch them develop," head coach Jim Flack said.

In the final the Bruins got off to a fast start, opening the game on a 16-0 run, and holding UTM off the scoreboard over the opening 5:04.

They led 29-9 after one, and weathered a 19-9 run from UTM that trimmed the margin to 10, before leading by 15 (51-36) at the break.

Sheridan put up 39 points in the third quarter, pushing their advantage out of reach at 90-57 going into the final stanza.

The Double-Blue will open conference play Oct. 26, when they host Fanshawe (8pm).
