Cross country set for national championship dash

KING CITY, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins cross country team is set for one final run in the 2018 campaign and will compete in the CCAA National Championship hosted by Seneca tomorrow.

"We had a big mileage week last week with a lot of fast, hard miles just to reset and get back into the swing of things," head coach Danny Webster said. "This week we've done more tapering and tried to simulate race conditions, so getting out hard, running race pace, finishing hard, and trying to simulate what the course will be like so that we're prepared. Right now everyone's healthy, everyone's fit and they're really excited to run. Hopefully we can improve upon our results from last year."

Located on the Oak Ridges Moraine, Seneca's King Campus is an ideal spot for a cross country race. The women will run a 6-kilometre course that consists of two 3-kilometre loops, while the men will run an 8-kilometre race.

Sheridan will use the same six-runner lineups they employed in the OCAA Championships two weeks ago, with Olivia Sidock, Yonta Gillespie, Erin Kinninmont, Marla Brown, Lexy Pakenham-Troth, and Isabel Catalli running for the women, while Cole Bond, Cameron Ross, Matthew Reeve, Andrew Convery, Alex Ball, and Quinn Middelton will run for the men.

Cross country became a national sport in 2002 so this season marks the first time that Sheridan has qualified both men's and women's teams in back-to-back years. In last year's race, Bond was the top finisher on the men's side, placing 15th in a time of 26:41.0, while Erin Kinninmont was the fastest on the women's side posting a time of 25:46.2.
