42 Bruins receive OCAA All-Academic Award

BRAMPTON, Ont. - With an OCAA men's basketball title, two nationals medals (men's basketball silver, men's soccer bronze), and three provincial medals (men's basketball gold, men's soccer silver, men's cross country bronze), 2018-19 was a banner season competitively for Sheridan Athletics, but it was also a strong year in the classroom, with 42 varsity student-athletes receiving OCAA All-Academic Awards.

"We strongly believe in the holistic student-athlete experience, where academic and athletic achievement go hand-in-hand, and important life and career skills are cultivated throughout," athletic director Jim Flack said. "We are delighted that so many of our Bruins have achieived this level of success in the classroom and congratulate them all on their tremendous achievement."

All 10 varsity teams had at least one recepient for the award given to full-time varsity student athletes that meet the honours standards at their respective institutions and have successfully completed one academic semester. At Sheridan, the threshold for an Honours GPA is 3.6 which equates to an average of at least 80 per cent.

Kendra Challis (women's soccer, Bachelor of Kinesiology) and Erin Kinninmont (cross country, Bachelor of Interior Design) both walked across the stage as Sheridan graduates earlier this month and both have received the OCAA All-Academic Award in each of their four seasons in Double Blue. Challis also won the silver medal for Kinesiology, holding the highest cumulative GPA in her graduating class.

Two teams hit double figures in terms of the number of individuals to receive the accolade, led by the women's soccer with 11 and followed by cross country with 10.

Chester Ashby (men's soccer) and Tamia Cooper-Evelyn were also named CCAA Academic All-Canadians, after receiving league all-star recognition and holding down the honours GPA.
