SCARBOROUGH, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (20-10, 13-8 OCAA) were knocked from championship contention, dropping a 3-0 decision to Niagara in the OCAA semi final.
"Niagara served well tonight and we had a tough time getting any consistency with our serve receive," head coach Scott Hunt said. "It was difficult for us to score points when they had the ball control advantage in most of the rallies."
The Bruins got off to a good start in the first set, staking themselves to a 10-6 lead early. Both sides tried to get a little more aggressive from the service line, with Niagara finding more success, as the Knights pulled in front 16-15.
Just as it looked as though they may carry that momentum into a first set win, the Bruins started to chip away at the margin, but couldn't climb all the way back, dropping the opener 25-23.
In the second frame, Niagara opened the game on a 7-2 run and almost nothing went well for the Double Blue, falling 25-11.
Sheridan's struggles continued to open the third set, falling into a 13-6 hole. Though the Bruins tried to fight their way out of it, their deficit was too large to overcome and Niagara closed out the match 25-16.
They will now look to re-group and try to salvage a medal, playing for OCAA bronze (2pm).
"It's not what we wanted to play for coming in, but it's still an opportunity to win a medal and to finish the season with a win. Not many teams get the chance to say that," Hunt said.
