Women's volleyball pick up pair of wins in final 2017 homestand, outlasting Cambrian in five

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's volleyball team (8-4, 5-4 OCAA) twice rallied from down a set to outlast Cambrian in five, and swept their final homestand of 2017, having also defeated Boreal (3-0) Saturday.

"It was nice to finish the semester with back-to-back wins," head coach Scott Hunt said. "We found another gear today against Cambrian, which I had been hoping we could get to. It was great to see us playing up to find another level of what we're capable of."

The Bruins made quick work of Boreal in their late afternoon clash Saturday, sweeping the Vipers 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.

Tamia Cooper-Evelyn posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Rachel Abrahams (13) and Stacey Gregorini (11) both posted double-digit dig totals.

Sunday provided far more drama however, as the Double Blue twice fell a set behind.

Cambrian took the opener 25-19 along with the third set, while Sheridan had wins in the second (27-25) and fourth (25-18) to set up the deciding fifth set.

The Bruins led 8-6 at the changeover, extended the margin to 11-6, and closed out 15-9, with a quartet of service aces proving critical in the final frame.

Tara Aune - who had the match-clinching kill - scored a career high 21 points (15 kills, five blocks, one ace), while Taylor Ley chipped in with 16 points (eight kills, four aces, four blocks), and Cooper-Evelyn posted a second-straight double-double with 12 points (eight kills, two aces, two blocks) and 16 digs.

Gregorini posted a season-high 27 digs, while Abrahams (21) and Joelle Parnham had 20 to fall four points shy of a triple-double with six points, and 31 assists.

Sheridan will resume conference play in six weeks, hosting the two teams just above them in the OCAA West standings on Jan. 13 (St. Clair, 6-3) and Jan. 14 (Niagara, 6-2).
