Women's rugby open season with pair of wins, tie

BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins women's rugby team (2-0-1 OCAA) closed out the first day of their second season of playing a sevens format unblemished, picking up a pair of wins to go with one draw.

"Today was a great start to our season," head coach Tamara Dixon said. "Our vets provided solid leadership and our rookies stepped up to the challenge. Everyone played a role and we have a strong base to build on. That said, there are a lot of takeaways from today and things that need improvement, and we will be going over all of them."

The Double-Blue trailed in each of their first two games - 10-0 to Algonquin and 7-5 to Seneca - but rallied in the second half to secure a 10-10 tie in their opener and 15-12 win in a re-match of last year's bronze medal game.

They were level 10-10 at the interval in their final game of the day against Mohawk, but continued their strong second half play, earning a 22-20 decision.

On the day, the Bruins out-scored their opponents 32-17 in the second half.

They will make their longest regular season road trip since the program began six years ago, when they travel to Kingston for the second OCAA match day on Sept. 23.

They will play one familiar (Humber) and two new foes (Loyalist and Fleming) when they make the trip.
