Men's basketball escape Mohawk with win

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's basketball team (27-3, 12-0 OCAA) didn't quite put together their best performance, but still found a way to grind their way to a 101-92 victory over Mohawk.

"I thought we went through stretches where we got some good shots, but they just weren't falling," assistant coach Nick Davis said. "It certainly wasn't our finest performance, but we still found a way to gut out a win."

Mohawk got off to a fast start and led by as many as eight early on, but late in the first quarter the Double-Blue steadied themselves and re-claimed the lead after one 27-25.

On more than one occasion they began to pull away, only to see Mohawk come up with an answer, thanks in large part to some lethal perimeter shooting as the home side connected on nine of 18 first half attempts.

The Bruins led 54-51 at the break and opened up their biggest lead of 13 points in the third quarter, but Mohawk replied once again and trimmed the lead to one.

The margin stayed as a two possession game for much of the fourth quarter before Sheridan was finally able to lean on their opponents and wear them down during the stretch.

Three Bruins posted double-doubles led by Brian Owusu (18 points, 11 rebounds), Tremaine Hibbert (16 points, 11 boards) and Nick Campbell (12 points and 13 rebounds).

Jemol Edwards (17 points) and Navdeep Deol (16 points) were also in double figures for Sheridan.

They will return to their home court for the final time this regular season as they host Sault for a swing trip this weekend (8pm, Saturday and 3pm, Sunday).

Blue notes: The game had been re-scheduled from January 25 after a power failure at Mohawk.
