Steve Ackroyd is a graduate of the Athletic Training and Management Program in 1978.
On September 19, 1981, Steve was the first student athlete to have his jersey number “33” retired at Sheridan.
Steve was a 6’1, 165lb, “ball hawk.” He was fleet footed and sure handed and as a cornerback and punt returner for 2 years with the Bruins he garnered All-Star recognition.
Offences regularly were intimidated by the presence of another All-Star Gary Brooks on one side and Steve on the other.
In the 1976 Championship Steve was named the game’s most valuable player with good cause. He intercepted 3 passes, a couple in key situations halting John Abbott Islander drives and was all over the field making crucial tackles. In league championship the same year, Steve ran back a 46 yard punt return to score against UQTR Patriots that helped affect the momentum for that win.
In both years he played with the Bruins, they were Ontario and Eastern Canadian Champions.
Steve went on to play for the Toronto Argonauts for five seasons from 1978-1982 including a Grey Cup appearance in 1982.
Steve was the coaches’ award winner in 1977-78 and was the quintessential player in representing the fundamental qualities of coach Custis’ teams, pride and dignity.
