Sheridan Volleyball has always been pre-eminent in the OCAA. With the numerous championships, National appearances, and All-Star awards, the Bruins still top Ontario as the most dominant volleyball program to ever exist.

That dominance started with the first OCAA championship in 1979, and the quality of the program delivered 10 championships in the years to follow. It can easily be said that Martin Kerstens was of primary importance in the beginning of that championship run.

Martin Kerstens was a member of Sheridan’s first OCAA championship team in 1978-79, the first of two consecutive Gold medals for the Bruins. In the 1978-79 season, Kersten’s was named to the OCAA All-Star team and was selected as an All-Canadian. He was also voted the league’s best spiker.

During the Bruins Second Championship season in 1979-80, Kerstens was named League MVP, CCAA All-Canadian, Team MVP, and Sheridan’s Male Athlete of the Year.

In 2000, he was named to the OCAA Men’s Volleyball All-Millennium Team.
