“A passion for people,” that’s how most people describe Fred Wannamaker and his career at Sheridan. Fred always tried to take a positive approach to serving students, and his attitude was contagious to all those who worked along with him.

Fred joined the Sheridan Athletic Department in the mid-seventies and immediately made an impact at the school and on the association level. He was the architect of the Men’s Volleyball Team that still holds the standard for most Provincial Championships. As Team Coordinator, Fred recruited for the coaches and kept them on track to such a degree that to this day, Paul Reader, the Head Caoch, still describes him as the impetus behind the Bruins success. In 1983, the Bruins won the only National Gold the OCAA had ever seen in Men’s Volleyball.

Fred never shied away from leadership in his tenure and convened everything from Table Tennis to Women’s Volleyball. He was also very active at the OCAA and CCAA level, assuming roles in Marketing, Sport Development and on a more than one occasion, Vice President.

Sheridan hosted a variety of Provincial Championships and in 1992-1993 Fred was key figure in the Bruins hosting the CCAA National Volleyball Tournament. In his final years of employment, Fred acted as OCAA Vice President and retired while in that portfolio, a fitting end to a stellar career.
